Who is this for?

Uses

In the past, boneset was used extensively for a number of conditions, including constipation, fever, and influenza. Chemicals in boneset do have some mild diuretic and laxative effects, making it slightly useful for relieving constipation. Diuretics promote the loss of urine from the body; laxatives stimulate bowel movements. Because it also encourages sweating, boneset may have some effectiveness for lowering fever. It may cause mucus to thin, possibly helping to break up lung congestion, and it may also relieve muscle discomfort associated with flu. Currently, however, the use of boneset is minimal because other drugs generally are more effective.

In general, herbal products are not subject to review or approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are not required to be standardized, meaning that the amounts of active ingredients or contaminants they contain may vary between brands or between different batches of the same brand. Not all of the risks, side effects, or interactions associated with the use of herbal products are known because few reliable studies of their use in humans have been done.
